From “Abundant Lives: A Progressive Christian Ethic of Flourishing” by Amanda Udis-Kessler
Beyond rights and freedom, many people focus on justice and equality as important ethical and political values. We can, however, ask the same questions about these values that we ask about rights and freedom. As noted above, “rights” language can be used to give some people rights and take away the rights of others, while “freedom” language can similarly be used to grant or remove freedom. Therefore, when we think about justice and equality, we want to know who is defining what “justice” or “equality” means in a given situation. We also want to know who benefits and who suffers from those definitions. However much we care about justice and equality in the abstract, we care even more about how they are used to help or hurt people.
