From “Life After Doom: Wisdom and Courage for a World Falling Apart” by Brian D. McLaren
I’ve come to see that the religious elite and the corporate elite are part of the same cabal, knowingly or unknowingly. Right up to this moment, they share together in the short-term profits of ecological overshoot and plunder. Together they discount the long-term costs, one in the name of God and the prophets, and the other in the name of corporate profits. To the degree religious leaders make parishioners into compliant workers, obedient voters, and enthusiastic consumers in the economy, corporate profiteers can exploit both human labor and the Earth’s resources with religious protection. To the degree that the profiteers are happy, they can make donations to their religious accomplices. These donations are called charitable, but to me they have the smell of payoffs.
