From “The Bible According to Christian Nationalists: Exploiting Scripture for Political Power” by Brian Kaylor
So this book is my attempt to not only document and debunk abuses of scripture by Christian Nationalistic preachers and politicians, but also to help arm pastors, Sunday School teachers, and average Christians to stand strong against deceptively enticing ways of misreading the Bible. Thus, while I will introduce you to specific examples that you may encounter, each of the next seven chapters is also about understanding a general tactic of biblical misuse. For instance, in chapter 3, we’ll look at the problem of assigning meaning to the chapter and verse numbers of Bible verses, like what the gerrymandering rally organizer did by reading Psalm 7:1 to support a congressional map for seven Republicans and one Democrat. I’ll unpack the problems with some examples in that chapter, but, more importantly, I’ll explain why we should oppose any such effort to derive divine, prophetic insights from the chapter and verse numbers. That way you’ll be ready in advance for the next time someone tries that kind of biblical “interpretation” even if it’s not an example I’ve analyzed in this book.
Christian Nationalism distorts scripture, twisting and molding and gerrymandering the sacred texts to fit a preferred political ideology.
