A Faustian Bargain

From “The False White Gospel: Rejecting Christian Nationalism, Reclaiming True Faith, and Refounding Democracy” by Jim Wallis

The Encyclopedia Britannica defines a “Faustian bargain” as “a pact whereby a person trades something of supreme moral or spiritual importance such as personal values or the soul, for some worldly benefit, such as knowledge, power, or riches.” That immoral bargain has played out in spectacular and most tragic array by the old religious right who became Trump’s religious warriors – to the disastrous detriment of both the church and state. Morality doesn’t matter. Character doesn’t matter. Values don’t matter. The treatment of women or the poor doesn’t matter. Only power matters. And faith is trumped.
